There are so many things to do in Leeds and one area where we are particularly blessed, is theatre., Leeds boasts a wonderfully diverse and thriving theatre scene, with a great many fantastic venues offering a huge variety of different shows to suit all tastes – which may be part of the reason we hear from so many visitors to the city looking for theatre break accommodation!
From the iconic grandeur of the famous Leeds Grand Theatre, with it’s amazing chandelier, ornate ceilings and sweeping staircases, to the likes of its neighbour, the Howard Assembly Room, a smaller, more intimate venue which was renovated and reopened in 2009, plus so many more theatres both large and small, there really is something for everyone.
Mad about Musicals?
If you love the overboard staging and the rousing signature tunes of all your favourite musical shows, you might like to head to The Grand Theatre & Opera House in April, when Brian Conley will be starring in the ever popular Barnum, the exhilarating Broadway smash full of spectacular circus acts and non stop action. The Grand’s magnificent stage will certainly be a fine host for such an iconic show!
Delighted by Drama?
The wonderful play ‘The King’s Speech’ (on which the Colin Firth movie was based) is coming to Leeds very soon, starring Jason Donovan, who is already receiving a lot of praise for the role. If you love literary plays, you might also be interested in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, the theatre adaptation of the famous book by Harper Lee, which comes to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in March and promises to be a compelling, deeply moving performance, telling the story with warmth and humour.
Whatever your taste in theatre, if you’re coming from out of town to see a show in one of Leeds’ many theatres, it’s certainly worth making a weekend of it. Weekend breaks in Leeds can be packed full of great things to do – from a wonderful meal before your chosen show, to drinks afterwards, to the many museums and art galleries – you might find that a weekend is not enough to fully enjoy all the city has to offer!
